How I Found Finance in Ohio
by Henrik Bacilieri
If someone had told me five years ago that I’d be sitting in Ohio writing about finance, I probably would’ve laughed.
To be honest, I didn’t even know what “finance” really meant back then. I grew up in Sicily, Italy—small town, small circle, and even smaller conversations about money. We talked about work, family, and dreams... but no one really talked about wealth, or how it was built. For a long time, I didn’t even know that was an option.
Back home, I dreamed big. First, I wanted to be a pilot. That one didn’t last long after life hit me with a dose of reality. Then I tried to chase soccer—my passion, my escape, my everything at one point. But sometimes passion isn’t enough when you’re missing the right system, resources, or timing.
By the time I landed in the United States, I was kind of at zero.
I moved in with my uncle in Ohio, just trying to reset and figure out what came next. No master plan, no backup blueprint—just me and a suitcase full of what-ifs.
That’s when things shifted.
My uncle had a background in real estate and basic investments. Nothing flashy, but he understood money. He understood leverage. He knew how to make a little stretch further, and he had this quiet confidence about him that came from being financially steady.
We’d talk in the evenings sometimes—just casually—and he’d mention things like compound interest, mutual funds, or cash flow. I had no idea what any of it meant at first, but something about those conversations stuck with me.
It wasn’t about the money itself—it was the freedom behind it.
I started reading. Watching videos. Picking up books I barely understood at first.
And for the first time in a long time, something actually clicked.
Finance wasn’t just about numbers—it was about strategy, discipline, and long-term thinking. It was about making your money work while you sleep.
And that blew my mind.
I realized there was an entire world out there that most people never get taught.
I definitely wasn’t taught it.
So here I am now—at the very beginning.
No success story yet.
No million-dollar portfolio.
Just a guy trying to figure it out.
This blog is where I’ll be writing it all down. What I learn. What I get wrong. What I’m aiming for. And how I plan to go from zero to financial freedom—one step at a time.
If you’re somewhere in that same space—starting over, starting fresh, or starting late—you’re not alone.
Let’s build something from the ground up.
